Four people died in distinct traffic incidents across different regions of Sri Lanka within a 24-hour period, with investigations ongoing into each case.
Four fatal road accidents were recorded across multiple police divisions within the past 24 hours, claiming the lives of individuals from various age groups and circumstances.
In the Uhana Police Division, a van lost control on the Ampara-Kandy Road near Weranketagoda Junction and struck a three-wheeler and two motorcycles that were parked at a garage. A 39-year-old motorcyclist from the Weranketagoda area died at the scene, while two van passengers sustained injuries and were transported to Ampara Hospital. The van driver was taken into custody. Simultaneously, on the Peradeniya-Chenkaladi Road in Nuwara Eliya, a private bus collided with another stationary bus before hitting a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a 46-year-old from Ratnapura, died following admission to Nuwara Eliya Hospital. The bus driver and two passengers suffered minor injuries.
The Weerambugedara Police Division witnessed a head-on motorcycle collision in Handagala that proved fatal for a 22-year-old rider, with another motorcyclist and pillion rider injured and admitted to Kurunegala Hospital. In the Habaraduwa Police Division, a 63-year-old cyclist from Unawatuna was struck by a truck in Polduwa and subsequently died at Karapitiya Hospital. The truck driver was arrested.
Police have launched investigations into all four incidents, with arrests made in at least two cases involving vehicle operators.
