The Sri Lanka Air Force has recognised javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga's Commonwealth Games achievement with a promotion from Corporal to Sergeant. The promotion was formally conferred by Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, the Air Force Commander, in acknowledgement of Tharanga's gold medal performance in the men's javelin throw event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games—a historic first athletics gold medal for Sri Lanka at the multi-nation sporting event.
Beyond Tharanga's individual accomplishment, the Air Force has extended recognition to the support team instrumental in the athlete's success. Retired Warrant Officer Tony Prasanna, Tharanga's coach, was commended for his expert preparation and guidance, while Corporal Chandima Gurusinghe, who served as the team's masseur, was acknowledged for his dedicated support throughout the training and competition process.
The Air Force characterised the promotion and recognition as reflective of a collective achievement rather than an individual effort alone.
