The Consumer Affairs Authority has confiscated a large cache of unregistered, substandard veterinary medicines during a coordinated enforcement operation, with plans underway to destroy the seized stock.

Regulatory authorities have taken custody of approximately 1,090 kilograms of illicit animal medicines valued at around 3 million rupees following a joint enforcement action in Colombo. The Consumer Affairs Authority and the Department of Animal Production and Health conducted the operation targeting the unregistered pharmaceutical stock that did not comply with official registration requirements.

The seized medicines were found to be substandard and had not been properly registered with the Department of Animal Production and Health, according to statements from the Consumer Affairs Authority. The discovery represents a significant intervention against the distribution of non-compliant veterinary products that could potentially pose risks to animal health and food safety chains.

Authorities have initiated procedures to destroy the confiscated stock of medicines to prevent any further circulation in the market. The joint operation underscores ongoing efforts by regulatory bodies to monitor and curb illegal pharmaceutical trade in the animal health sector.
