A video circulating on social media purporting to show Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara livestreaming while driving in August 2026 has been verified as footage from August 2023, before he held ministerial office.

A fact-checking investigation has debunked claims that a video of Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara driving while speaking to camera was recorded recently. According to Fact Crescendo Sri Lanka, the footage actually dates from August 13, 2023, when Nanayakkara held a different role as the National People's Power's Moratuwa electorate organizer.

The video resurfaced on social media platforms this month, gaining traction among users who believed it showed current conduct. The confusion appeared to stem from audio in the clip where Nanayakkara mentions "today is August 13," prompting viewers to assume the recording was recent. However, reverse image search analysis confirmed the footage had been circulating online since August 2023.

According to the fact-check, the full video depicts Nanayakkara inviting supporters to an NPP electorate meeting in Moratuwa that was attended by then-NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and MP Harini Amarasuriya. Contrary to some claims, the footage was not recorded by Nanayakkara himself on a mobile phone while driving. Instead, another person seated in the front passenger seat filmed the video as Nanayakkara spoke.

The Justice Ministry's Media Division corroborated the findings, confirming that the video was produced in 2023 prior to Nanayakkara's appointment to the Cabinet. Fact Crescendo classified the social media claims presenting the footage as current material as "Misleading."
