Twenty High Court judges from Sri Lanka participated in a week-long training programme at India's National Judicial Academy, covering topics ranging from digital transformation to case management.

A group of 20 High Court judges from Sri Lanka completed an orientation and knowledge exchange programme at the Indian National Judicial Academy in Bhopal between August 10–14, 2026. According to the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, the initiative was part of broader capacity-building cooperation between the two nations.

The programme covered nine key areas of judicial administration and practice. Participants engaged in sessions on judicial decision-making and leadership, governance standards, digital technology adoption in courts, case management procedures, pre-trial processes and plea agreements, commercial arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, cybercrime and electronic evidence handling, and judicial wellness management.

The training reflects expanding educational ties between the countries. A previous cohort of 20 Sri Lankan judges completed a similar programme in December 2025, and positive feedback from that group led to the continuation of the initiative. The current programme was organized under a capacity-building framework announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an April 2025 visit to Sri Lanka, which allocated 700 annual training slots for Sri Lankan professionals across various sectors.

The judicial training is part of India's broader engagement with Sri Lankan civil service development. A memorandum of understanding between India's National Centre for Good Governance and Sri Lanka's Institute of Development Administration provides training for approximately 300 Sri Lankan civil service officers annually. Combined with the judicial and other professional training slots, India's capacity-building initiative now reaches around 1,000 Sri Lankan participants each year.
