The government has declared a three-day period of national mourning following the death of veteran musician Visharad Dr. Nanda Malini, who passed away at age 82. State institutions have been instructed to fly national flags at half-mast during this period.
Sri Lanka's government has announced a three-day national mourning period in response to the passing of celebrated musician Visharad Dr. Nanda Malini. The legendary singer died on August 20 at her residence in Nawala at the age of 82.
The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has issued directives requiring all state institutions to display the national flag at half-mast from August 21 through 23. The instruction was communicated via Home Affairs Circular No. 04/2026, signed by S. Aloka Bandara, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The directive applies to Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Chief Secretaries, District Secretaries and Government Agents, as well as heads of all departments, corporations, and statutory boards. The three-day mourning period reflects the state's recognition of Nanda Malini's significant contributions to Sri Lankan music and culture throughout her long career.
