The Northern Naval Command has begun delivering drinking water to ponies on Delft Island in Jaffna as prolonged dry weather has exhausted natural water sources in the region.

The Sri Lanka Navy initiated a water supply programme on August 21 to assist the pony population on Delft Island, which has faced severe water scarcity due to extended dry conditions affecting the Jaffna District. The vessel SLNS Vasaba has been deployed to deliver drinking water to the animals in the Vellai area on the island's western side.

According to the Navy, the programme forms part of broader efforts under the national Clean Sri Lanka initiative and aims to safeguard the island's biodiversity during the drought. Delft Island's ponies represent a significant attraction for both domestic and international tourists, making their welfare a matter of public concern during the water shortage.

Beyond the animal welfare effort, the Navy has continued its ongoing work providing fresh water to human communities across the Jaffna District. The service has established reverse osmosis plants on various islands to address water supply challenges for residents affected by the prolonged dry weather.
