Sri Lanka CERT and the Police Information Technology Division have trained over 300 police officers across three southern districts in cyber security awareness as part of a nationwide capacity-building initiative.
Sri Lanka CERT, working alongside the Sri Lanka Police, has completed a series of cyber security training programmes targeting more than 300 officers stationed in the Galle, Matara, and Tangalle Police Divisions. The initiative forms part of a broader nationwide effort to equip law enforcement personnel with skills to identify, prevent, and respond to cyber threats and digital crimes.
The training sessions focused on practical knowledge related to contemporary cybercrime methods, including social media-based scams and techniques for digital evidence collection and preservation. Officers received instruction on information security practices and appropriate responses to cyber incidents, with particular emphasis on recognising cyber-enabled crimes and maintaining secure digital practices during official operations.
The programmes were implemented under the direction of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya and coordinated by Deputy Inspector General Nishani Senavirathna of the Police Research and Information Technology Directorate. Training was delivered by Nirosh Ananda, Chief Information Security Officer at Sri Lanka CERT, alongside other cyber security specialists.
According to officials, the collaboration between Sri Lanka CERT and police authorities aims to strengthen cyber security culture within law enforcement and enhance institutional capacity to manage the evolving digital threat environment. The organisations have indicated plans to continue conducting similar training programmes across other regions.
