The former Chief Jailor of Negombo Prison has provided evidence to magistrate court regarding a violent incident that killed 10 prison officers and 22 inmates, with the court imposing strict secrecy orders citing national security concerns.
The Chief Jailor who oversaw operations at Negombo Prison during a recent fatal clash has given testimony before Negombo Magistrate's Court regarding the violent incident. Wickrama Jayantha Kumara provided his evidence over a two-hour session on March 30, during which he addressed the circumstances surrounding the disturbance that resulted in the deaths of 10 prison officers and 22 inmates.
Following the testimony, Magistrate Shilani Perera imposed restrictions on public disclosure of the evidence presented. The court determined that the information revealed during the testimony contains sensitive material related to national security and ordered that its contents remain confidential. The magistrate emphasized that revealing such information through media channels could present a threat to national security, and instructed that the testimony be stored securely.
In related developments, the court has received a comprehensive report concerning 89 prison police officers who were deployed to Negombo Prison from Welikada Prison during the incident. Additionally, prison officials submitted documentation regarding individuals receiving medical treatment at both Colombo National Hospital and Negombo Hospital in the aftermath of the clash.
