The National Council for Road Safety has announced a revamped licensing framework for public transport drivers beginning September 1, significantly extending the mandatory training period.
Sri Lanka will introduce a new licensing system for public transport drivers starting September 1, according to an announcement from the National Council for Road Safety. The overhaul represents a substantial shift in how the country certifies individuals to operate passenger vehicles.
Under the revised framework, the training duration required for obtaining a public transport driver's licence has been extended from two days to ten days. This fivefold increase in training time marks a significant change from the previous certification process.
According to Council Chairman Manjula Kularatne, the decision to introduce the new system was driven by identified weaknesses in the existing passenger transport driver licensing framework. Officials determined that additional training requirements would address these shortcomings and presumably enhance road safety standards for public transport operations.
