Sri Lanka's Public Security Minister has dismissed threats against the Inspector General of Police as a reaction to intensified investigations, while confirming that authorities are investigating allegations of a plot against the police chief.
Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala has stated that the government will not be deterred from pursuing its law enforcement agenda despite serious threats made against the Inspector General of Police. Speaking in Parliament, Wijepala confirmed that the Central Crimes Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation following a complaint regarding alleged assassination plot threats, which he described as an attack on the rule of law and the justice system.
Wijepala attributed the controversial statements to anxiety among individuals facing criminal investigations. According to the Minister, authorities are currently probing numerous serious offences including murders, financial fraud, and misappropriation of public assets. He suggested that those making threats against the police chief were connected to political movements that had previously obstructed justice in major criminal cases.
The Minister characterized the alleged plot as an attempt to interfere with independent police investigations into bribery, corruption, fraud and alleged misuse of public resources. Wijepala assured Parliament that the government would provide comprehensive protection to the Inspector General of Police and all officers conducting investigations. He pledged that anti-corruption efforts and operations against organized crime and drug trafficking would continue without interruption, despite political pressure or threats.
