The government has initiated a phased tourism promotion strategy beginning with an interim campaign targeting Australia, the UK, Germany, India, China, and Russia, ahead of a comprehensive global initiative planned for 2027.
Sri Lanka's tourism authorities have commenced a Rs. 1.5 billion interim marketing campaign designed to revitalise the country's tourism sector following delays in previous promotional efforts. The new administration had rejected an earlier tourism program and subsequently partnered with the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and other development partners to develop a fresh approach. According to tourism officials, the interim phase will initially concentrate on six priority markets, with Australia leading the rollout by end of August, followed by expansion to other regions by October-November.
The campaign employs a multi-channel strategy combining digital marketing, public relations, virtual reality activations, and roadshows tailored to each market's travel preferences. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam explained that the approach will be market-specific, with Australia receiving emphasis on adventure tourism while India receives stronger digital marketing given its developed online travel-planning sector. The initiative promotes seven core experiences including leisure, culture, nature, adventure, wellness, luxury, and business events, while developing niche products around marine tourism, diving, Ayurveda, and spiritual offerings.
The authorities are targeting 2.7 million tourist arrivals and $4.2 billion in tourism revenue this year, with aspirations to exceed 3 million arrivals next year and reach $10 billion in revenue by 2030. Rather than simply increasing visitor numbers, officials emphasise attracting visitors who stay longer and spend more in local communities. Data-driven monitoring through performance dashboards will track engagement and conversion rates to ensure measurable returns on investment. The campaign will also direct tourism beyond established destinations into relatively unexplored areas including the Eastern Province and parts of the North and North Central regions.
Preparations are underway for a full-scale global campaign with Rs. 5 billion allocated, incorporating broader nation-branding connecting tourism with Sri Lanka's tea, heritage, culture, and creative industries. Agencies are expected to be appointed by February 2027, enabling a March-April launch. Digital payment infrastructure expansion and partnerships with major airlines including Emirates and discussions with carriers such as IndiGo and Qatar Airways aim to enhance accessibility and spending convenience for international visitors.
