OpenAI is expanding its advertising initiative to European users of its free and budget-tier ChatGPT service from August 24, marking a significant step in the company's effort to increase revenue streams ahead of a potential initial public offering.
OpenAI announced late Tuesday that it will introduce advertisements to ChatGPT users across 31 European countries beginning Monday, August 24. The expansion follows the company's initial rollout of ads in the United States in February and represents an effort to monetize its user base beyond subscription models. Advertisements will appear on the platform's free tier and Go subscription service, which costs eight euros monthly, while the premium paid service will remain advertisement-free.
According to OpenAI, the company views this expansion as an opportunity for European marketers to connect with users during moments of active research and decision-making. The statement emphasized that conversations will remain private from advertisers, with no customer data being sold, and that all ads will be clearly labeled and separated from ChatGPT responses. The company also asserted that advertising would not influence the answers provided by the platform.
The revenue-generation strategy reflects OpenAI's significant operational costs as it prepares for a potential initial public offering that could value the company at approximately one trillion dollars. The company is competing for dominance against American rival Anthropic and lower-cost Chinese models in a competitive artificial intelligence market. However, critics have raised concerns about potential user distrust, warning that if responses appear influenced by advertiser interests, the credibility of ChatGPT could suffer. Anthropic, by contrast, has positioned its commitment to remaining advertisement-free as a core competitive advantage.
