Sri Lanka's Public Health Inspectors' Union has halted dengue control activities nationwide, protesting the transfer of a senior health official at the airport health office.
The Public Health Inspectors' Union announced the suspension of all dengue control duties across Sri Lanka beginning today, citing objections to an administrative personnel move. According to Chamil Muthukuda, the union's General Secretary, the decision followed an executive committee meeting held to address what the organisation characterises as an arbitrary transfer of the senior Medical Officer of Health stationed at Bandaranaike International Airport's health office.
The union intends to escalate its protest through additional measures. A token strike has been scheduled for the following day as part of the industrial action campaign. Muthukuda indicated that the trajectory of the dispute remains contingent upon responses from relevant authorities, with the union prepared to reassess its position based on developments.
The suspension of dengue control operations carries potential public health implications, as such activities form a critical component of the island's disease surveillance and prevention framework. The timing of the action during ongoing dengue transmission periods raises concerns about disease management efforts during the dispute resolution process.
