Authorities have implemented heightened security measures across Sri Lankan prisons following unrest at the Mahara Prison facility, which resulted in significant property damage before being brought under control.

Security protocols have been strengthened at prisons throughout Sri Lanka in response to disturbances that occurred at the Mahara Prison, according to Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajeewa Medawatta. The senior officer visited the facility to assess the situation and briefed media on the heightened measures being implemented.

The unrest at Mahara Prison extended into the early morning hours, during which inmates caused extensive damage to prison infrastructure. The disturbance prompted a coordinated response involving multiple agencies, including the Department of Prisons, Sri Lanka Police, the Special Task Force, the Sri Lanka Air Force, and the Sri Lanka Navy, which collectively worked to restore order at the facility.

Following the incident, special attention has been directed toward security at major prison facilities across the country, including the Welikada, Magazine, Kalutara, and Negombo prisons. Medawatta indicated that authorities continue efforts to fully secure the Mahara Prison and restore normal operations at the site. Officials have indicated that the situation has been brought under control as of the morning of the incident.
