Authorities have opened two spill gates at Polgolla Dam to manage flood risks across multiple districts following heavy rainfall, releasing significant water volumes downstream.

The Office of the Engineer-in-Charge at Polgolla Mahaweli Dam opened two spill gates on Wednesday, each raised by two feet, in response to intensified rainfall affecting several regions of Sri Lanka. The measure was implemented to manage potential flooding risks caused by the weather conditions.

As a result of the gate openings, approximately 3,940 cubic feet of water per second is flowing into the Victoria Reservoir, according to the Engineer-in-Charge's Office. This controlled release aims to prevent water levels from rising to dangerous heights upstream while managing downstream flow.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution and implement safety measures where necessary. Particular attention has been directed toward communities situated along the downstream sections of the Mahaweli River and in low-lying zones adjacent to the Victoria Reservoir, which face elevated risks during periods of elevated water discharge.
