Police have arrested a man accused of stealing a bag belonging to a Russian tourist in the Pottuvil area, recovering foreign currency valued at approximately Rs. 1.69 million.
Law enforcement officers from the Police Special Task Force operating in the Arugambay region have apprehended a suspect in connection with the theft of a tourist's belongings. Acting on information received on July 31, the STF team located the alleged perpetrator in the Kudakal area of Pottuvil while he was carrying the stolen bag.
The arrested individual, a 27-year-old from Pasarachchenai in Pottuvil, was found with a wallet containing foreign currency belonging to a Russian national visiting the country. According to police, the recovered money was valued at Rs. 1.69 million. The stolen property and the victim were both handed over to Pottuvil Police following the arrest.
Authorities have initiated proceedings to present the suspect before the Pottuvil Magistrate's Court as part of standard legal procedures. Pottuvil Police are continuing their investigation into the incident to establish further details surrounding the alleged theft and determine whether additional charges may apply.
