The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya has petitioned the Supreme Court to review the constitutionality of the government's proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, citing concerns about democratic safeguards and fundamental rights.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has initiated legal proceedings before the Supreme Court to contest the validity of the 22nd Constitutional Amendment, which the government tabled in Parliament. The petition, filed under case number SC/SD/31/2026, marks the party's formal response to the proposed constitutional changes.
According to the SJB, party officials conducted a comprehensive review of the amendment's provisions before deciding to seek judicial intervention. The party stated that it believes the Supreme Court should make a determination on the constitutionality of the proposal and address potential legal concerns stemming from its content.
The opposition has framed its challenge around broader constitutional principles. The SJB emphasized that any amendments to the Constitution warrant rigorous examination, particularly regarding their implications for the country's democratic institutions, the balance of power between governmental branches, and the protection of citizens' fundamental rights.
