Police have announced a comprehensive traffic management plan for the second Randoli Perahera scheduled for August 24, featuring multiple alternative routes to manage congestion during the historic festival procession.
The second Randoli Perahera of the Kandy Esala Perahera will commence at 7 p.m. on August 24, departing from the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Police have implemented a special security and traffic management plan for the event, which forms part of the broader festival running from August 18 to August 28.
Authorities have established multiple alternative routes to guide motorists around the temporary traffic restrictions. Heavy vehicles travelling from Katugastota towards Kandy are directed to use Mahaiyawa Junction via Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha and Police Junction. Light vehicles have been instructed to follow D.S. Senanayake Veediya through Cross Street to Yatinuwara Veediya, with specific directional turns near Meera Maccam Mosque before rejoining Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha. Vehicles departing Kandy towards Katugastota should travel from Police Junction along Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha.
For traffic arriving from Tennekumbura and Ampitiya, routes via Sangaraja Mawatha to Wales Park Junction have been designated. Vehicles heading towards Colombo should use the left side of designated roads, while those proceeding towards Kandy city should use the right side. Additional entry to Kandy is available via Rajapihilla Mawatha Junction through Mosque Road.
Police have advised motorists to utilise alternative routes and cooperate with traffic officers deployed throughout the area. The special measures during the Perahera period include roadblocks, security checkpoints, vehicle and personal inspections, tourist assistance services, and designated parking arrangements to ensure public safety and manage congestion effectively.
