Sri Lanka's benchmark stock index declined on Wednesday amid mixed trading activity, with telecommunications and financial stocks leading losses while consumer and tobacco companies provided support.

The Colombo Stock Exchange ended Wednesday's trading session in negative territory, with the All Share Price Index dropping 62.50 points to close at 21,416.57, representing a 0.29 percent decline. The more actively traded S&P SL20 index similarly retreated, falling 20.53 points or 0.34 percent to reach 6,020.38, according to exchange data.

Gains were led by Richard Pieris and Company, which rose 3.03 percent to 27.20 rupees, alongside contributions from Hayleys, Ceylon Tobacco Company, Hemas Holdings, and Central Finance Company. These positive movers were outweighed by declines in key sectors, with Dialog Axiata falling 1.06 percent, LOLC Holdings dropping 1.67 percent, and DFCC Bank sliding 1.17 percent.

Market activity remained relatively modest, with total turnover reaching 1.54 billion rupees. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco sector dominated trading volumes, accounting for 461.6 million rupees of overall turnover. Notable activity included director dealings in Maharaja Foods, when GTV Global Holdings purchased approximately 1.3 million shares across two tranches on August 18. The acquisitions, completed at price points of 16.50 and 16.40 rupees per share, contributed to Maharaja Foods closing marginally higher at 16.60 rupees, up 0.61 percent.
