Wildlife authorities have arrested a drone camera operator for flying an unmanned aircraft over the Kasikota elephant migration corridor, where the animals cross the Galagamuwa–Kasikota main road. The suspect appeared in court and entered a guilty plea.
A drone operator has been taken into custody by wildlife officers for operating an unmanned aircraft above the Kasikota elephant corridor in the North Western Wildlife Region. The incident occurred as elephants were attempting to traverse the Galagamuwa–Kasikota main road, with the drone activity disrupting their movement across this critical migration route.
The suspect was brought before the Mahawa Magistrate's Court with the drone equipment seized as evidence. According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the individual entered a guilty plea during the court appearance. The case has been adjourned for a future hearing date.
The Department highlighted that the Kasikota Elephant Underpass regularly attracts large numbers of spectators eager to observe elephants crossing the roadway. Authorities cautioned that such gatherings sometimes lead to disruptive behaviour that poses serious safety risks. Wildlife officials warned that elephants may become aggressive and chase people when startled or provoked in these situations, potentially resulting in fatal injuries.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation announced that enforcement operations will continue against unauthorised drone activities in wildlife areas. Officials stated they will persist in apprehending individuals conducting unauthorised filming operations and will present both offenders and equipment before the courts.
