At least 12 people have died and eight remain missing in the Philippines after heavy rains and two tropical cyclones triggered widespread flooding and landslides across multiple regions.
A combination of the southwest monsoon and two tropical cyclones, Kujira and Dolphin, have caused significant devastation across the Philippines. As of Monday morning, the confirmed death toll stood at 12, with eight additional individuals still unaccounted for, according to reports from the Office of Civil Defense.
The fatalities resulted from various causes related to the severe weather conditions. These included landslides, rockslides, fallen trees, electrocution, and drowning, according to Assistant Secretary Laurence Mina of the Office of Civil Defense. The disaster has also left 11 people injured across affected areas.
The scale of displacement has been substantial, with nearly 586,000 individuals impacted across nine regions and 33 provinces. Authorities conducted preemptive evacuations of 4,866 people in Regions I, III, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa as a precautionary measure. More than 32,800 people have been displaced from their homes and are currently sheltering in evacuation centers or staying with relatives.
Response efforts continue as rescue and relief operations work to locate missing persons and assist those affected by the disaster.
