The Government Analyst's Department reports that drug-related cases constitute approximately 70 percent of its workload, with the agency prioritizing analysis of samples from suspects in remand custody.

The Government Analyst's Department is managing a substantial caseload dominated by drug-related matters, according to Acting Government Analyst Kamani Perera. In a statement to News 1st, Perera indicated that roughly seven out of every ten reports received by the department pertain to drug cases, underscoring the significant portion of the agency's resources devoted to narcotics investigations.

The department has implemented procedural adjustments aimed at accelerating case processing for individuals held in remand custody. Perera explained that prioritizing analysis reports for suspects awaiting trial helps facilitate their progression through the legal system. This focus on detained individuals represents a strategic effort to reduce delays in the judicial process.

To handle its expanding responsibilities, the Government Analyst's Department has expanded its workforce. According to Perera, 22 new Assistant Government Analysts were recruited to permanent positions within the Drugs Division as of February 2026. This recruitment drive has brought the total number of officials working at the department to 83 personnel.
