The Colombo High Court has concluded a lengthy trial by convicting two former police officers and a civilian of robbery charges stemming from an incident at a Dehiwala restaurant in 2008. High Court Judge Rashmi Singappuli delivered the judgment, determining that the prosecution had successfully established its case against all three accused.
The Attorney General's office had pursued charges against the defendants, alleging they were involved in a robbery that occurred following a brawl at the restaurant. The court found sufficient evidence to support these allegations during the course of the trial.
Sentencing reflected different roles or circumstances in the case. The civilian convicted received a five-year rigorous imprisonment sentence, while each of the two former police officers was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The differentiation in sentence length suggests the court considered varying degrees of culpability among the three defendants in the incident that took place nearly two decades ago.
