Sri Lankan authorities have announced substantial results from their intensified anti-narcotics operations, including the arrest of nearly a quarter million suspects and the seizure of significant quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, and pills.
Sri Lanka Police have disclosed the scale of their anti-drug campaign, reporting that 239,384 individuals have been arrested over a nine-month period as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and investigate illicit wealth. According to Police Spokesman Assistant Superintendent F.U. Wootler, among those arrested were 995 major traffickers who are now facing legal proceedings. The operations have also expanded to include asset investigations targeting 378 individuals suspected of narcotics-related financial crimes.
The drug seizures during the period have been substantial. Authorities confiscated approximately 2,253 kilograms of heroin valued at around Rs. 49,584 million, along with 2,640 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine estimated at Rs. 42,251 million. Police also seized nearly 3.6 million narcotic pills. Between 2024 and 2026, a total of 4,553 kilograms of illicit drugs were destroyed.
A concerning trend has emerged regarding youth involvement in drug-related offences. Police data indicates that 7,866 young people aged 18 to 21 were arrested during this period, while 743 children between ages 14 and 18 were also taken into custody in connection with narcotics-related offences.
Public engagement has reportedly been crucial to the operations' success. The dedicated hotline 1818 has generated valuable intelligence, enabling targeted enforcement actions. Additionally, authorities have initiated legal proceedings to vest approximately Rs. 772 million in properties with the State. Through Interpol Red Notices, arrangements have been made to return 35 individuals to Sri Lanka, with efforts continuing against 94 additional suspects.
