Ishara Sewwandi, the principal suspect in the killing of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa, has been remanded until August 21 following her appearance before the Colombo Magistrate's Court after spending ten months in detention.
Ishara Sewwandi appeared before Colombo Additional Magistrate Liyan Warusawithana on August 10, where the court ordered her remand until August 21. The suspect has remained in detention under the Colombo Crimes Division throughout her ten-month period in custody since her extradition from Nepal.
Sewwandi was arrested on October 14, 2025, during a joint operation conducted by Sri Lanka's Criminal Investigation Department and Nepalese security forces near Kathmandu. She was returned to Sri Lanka the following day alongside five other suspects and has been questioned continuously by investigators since her arrival.
Sewwandi is accused of involvement in the February 19, 2025 shooting of Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside Courtroom No. 5 of the Colombo Aluthkade Magistrate's Court. According to investigators, the firearm used in the killing was allegedly brought into the courthouse premises by Sewwandi. The incident was described as one of the most shocking assassinations to occur within a court complex in Sri Lanka.
The Colombo Crimes Division submitted an investigation progress report to the court during today's hearing, which informed the magistrate's decision to extend the remand period. The case remains under active investigation with further court appearances anticipated.
