Sri Lanka's Ministry of Agriculture has unveiled a comprehensive plan to address food security challenges expected during El Niño conditions, with emphasis on water management and farmer education.

The Ministry of Agriculture has developed a framework aimed at maintaining adequate food supplies and preventing shortages as El Niño weather patterns affect the country. According to Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne, the initiative includes structured cultivation strategies designed to strengthen agricultural resilience during the anticipated climatic challenges.

Water management has emerged as a central pillar of the ministry's approach, reflecting concerns about drought and water scarcity typically associated with El Niño phenomena. Officials have prioritized sustainable water resource utilization across agricultural operations to maximize productivity while conserving limited supplies.

To support implementation, the ministry has launched educational campaigns targeting farming communities. These awareness programmes focus on equipping farmers with practical knowledge about efficient water use and reducing wastage during cultivation, recognizing that farmer participation is essential to the plan's success.
