Sri Lankan authorities have initiated comprehensive investigations into the local and international assets of Shiran Basik, a 48-year-old drug kingpin recently deported from Dubai, examining his alleged involvement in trafficking operations and organized crime.
Police have opened multiple investigations targeting the assets and criminal connections of Shiran Basik following his deportation from the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka. According to Police Media Spokesperson SSP F.U. Wootler, specialized units across several police stations are examining different allegations against the 48-year-old Dehiwela resident, with particular focus on his drug-trafficking network and properties allegedly acquired through criminal activity.
Investigations have identified properties allegedly owned by Basik in Wellawatte, Boralesgamuwa, and Dehiwela, with police planning to question those who operated these facilities. During questioning, Basik reportedly claimed ownership of five hotels along Colombo's Marine Drive. Police have engaged Interpol to obtain information regarding his properties in the United Arab Emirates and other countries, and have requested documentation on his overseas assets.
Basik, who is subject to an Interpol 'Red Notice', was arrested in Dubai after photographs and video footage of Iranian military drones and missiles used in attacks on the UAE were discovered on his mobile phone. The United States had reportedly requested his transfer for further investigation. He was returned to Sri Lanka on Saturday via AirArabia flight 3L708, arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport around 8:48 pm. Police have secured 72-hour detention authorization for questioning.
Multiple agencies including the Police Narcotics Bureau, Dehiwela Police, Mount Lavinia Police, Piliyandala Police, and the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau are conducting parallel investigations into allegations ranging from drug trafficking to firearms possession and weapons possession. Police are also examining Basik's potential involvement in recent prison clashes, and have uncovered alleged links connecting him to the 2012 Welikada Prison riot.
