The Department of Meteorology has forecast a significant increase in rainfall across multiple districts from August 25, while warning of dangerously high temperatures in northern and eastern regions.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory indicating that rainfall is expected to intensify across several parts of Sri Lanka beginning August 25. According to meteorologist Sachith Wickramanayake, the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts are likely to experience the most significant precipitation during this period, with the southwestern region particularly affected.

In the immediate term, showers are anticipated across the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces today, along with the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Additional evening and night showers may occur in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Monaragala districts, while most other areas are expected to remain relatively dry. Light rainfall is also possible in the North Western Province.

Concurrently, the meteorological department has warned of extreme heat in northern, north central and eastern regions, where apparent temperatures could reach between 39°C and 45°C. In areas such as Polonnaruwa, temperatures are already climbing above 32°C by mid-morning, creating conditions that the department considers hazardous for outdoor activity. The public has been advised to avoid prolonged time outside between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., stay hydrated and seek shelter in cool environments.

Additionally, maritime conditions are expected to deteriorate, with sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil, likely becoming occasionally rough as wind speeds may increase to approximately 60 kilometers per hour.
