Police have arrested two suspects following separate operations in the Hambegamuwa Police area, seizing more than a tonne of cannabis and tens of thousands of plants.
Two individuals have been taken into custody following coordinated anti-drug operations in Monaragala's Hambegamuwa Police division on Saturday. The arrests represent a significant seizure in the region's ongoing efforts against narcotics trafficking.
The Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force conducted the raids in the Gomagala area during the early morning and afternoon hours based on prior intelligence. In the first operation, officers apprehended a suspect carrying approximately 1,044 kilograms and 180 grams of cannabis. A second raid resulted in the arrest of another individual found with 54,096 cannabis plants.
The two suspects, aged 30 and 38, are from the Ethambalawa locality. Both have been transferred to Hambegamuwa Police Station, where they remain in custody pending further investigation. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the nature of the operation or the intended scope of the seized materials.
