Nearly one in ten bus drivers and conductors have tested positive for drug use across multiple provinces, according to ongoing screening by the National Transport Medical Institute.
A drug testing initiative targeting bus drivers and conductors has identified concerning rates of substance use among public transport workers. According to Professor Clifford Perera, chairman of the National Transport Medical Institute, approximately 10% of those tested have returned positive results for drug use.
The testing programme has so far covered four provinces: Western, Southern, North Western, and Sabaragamuwa. Professor Perera indicated that the screening process remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to evaluate drivers who may be operating vehicles while under the influence of drugs.
