Hayleys Solar has introduced the concept of "Flexumers" — flexible energy users who strategically manage electricity consumption, storage, and export — as a way to ease grid capacity pressures preventing new rooftop solar installations across Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's growing adoption of rooftop solar systems is encountering infrastructure bottlenecks, with many households and businesses unable to secure grid connection approvals due to transformer and distribution line capacity limitations in their areas. The Ceylon Electricity Board has restricted new solar applications in certain regions where existing infrastructure is considered fully utilised.
Hayleys Solar proposes addressing this challenge through intelligent energy management rather than relying solely on costly grid upgrades. The company has introduced the "Flexumer" model, distinguishing it from traditional prosumers who simply export surplus solar energy as it is generated. Flexumers, by contrast, use smart technologies to determine optimal timing for consuming, storing, or exporting electricity based on broader grid requirements.
According to Roshane Perera, Deputy Managing Director of Energy at Hayleys Fentons Limited, a single transformer currently considered fully utilised by a few households with 5 kW solar systems could accommodate significantly more installations if customers operated as Flexumers. By strategically reducing exports during peak supply periods and storing or consuming energy locally, customers would decrease transformer loading while maintaining system reliability.
The Flexumer approach relies on hybrid solar systems, battery storage, smart inverters, and intelligent energy management solutions to reduce unnecessary grid exports during congested periods while increasing support during high-demand hours. Hayleys Solar argues this framework could enable substantially more rooftop solar deployments using existing network infrastructure, thereby accelerating Sri Lanka's renewable energy transition while improving overall power quality and reliability.
