Investigations into a police shooting incident in Narahenpita have revealed that officers fired at a vehicle after the driver ignored orders to stop, with authorities discovering the incident was connected to an alleged abduction of a young woman from a university graduation ceremony.
Police opened fire on a vehicle traveling along the Narahenpita-Nawala Road after its driver refused to stop at a roadblock, according to reports from NewsWire. The shooting occurred after authorities received information at approximately 1:30 p.m. that a young woman was being taken away in a car.
Investigations have since established that the woman had allegedly been abducted by her boyfriend from the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, where she had attended the University of Colombo's Sri Palee Campus graduation ceremony with family members. According to police accounts, the woman's father alerted authorities after she was taken from the venue. The driver of the vehicle subsequently abandoned the car and fled the scene, while officers located the young woman inside.
Police have identified the driver as the woman's boyfriend, with both reportedly residing in the Matara District. According to the information police received, the woman had traveled to Colombo for the graduation ceremony without informing her boyfriend. Notably, investigators discovered that while the vehicle belonged to the boyfriend, the woman's father had used it to transport the family to the ceremony.
The vehicle has been secured at the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station, and the woman was examined by the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer. Police operations are continuing to locate and apprehend the driver, with further investigations underway.
