The National Dengue Control Unit reports 8,043 dengue cases in the first 20 days of August, bringing the year-to-date total to 93,381 with 71 deaths recorded across the island.

Sri Lanka's dengue situation continues to present a significant public health concern, with the National Dengue Control Unit documenting 8,043 cases during the opening three weeks of August. This brings the cumulative caseload for the year to 93,381 infections, alongside 71 recorded fatalities. The case fatality rate currently stands at 0.076% according to health officials.

The August figures represent a decline compared to previous months, with July recording 29,964 cases and June documenting 21,533 cases. The Western Province remains the most severely affected region, accounting for just over half of all cases nationwide at 49,440 patients or 52.94% of the total. The Southern Province has registered 13,697 cases while the Central Province reported 8,441 cases.

At the district level, Gampaha continues to experience the highest caseload with 19,888 infections, followed by Colombo District with 18,535 cases and Kandy District with 6,755 cases. Additional clusters have emerged in Matara, Kalutara, Galle, and Ratnapura districts with 6,077, 6,040, 5,122, and 4,979 cases respectively. The Colombo Municipal Council area has reported 3,760 cases.

Healthcare authorities have identified 76 Medical Officer of Health areas across the country as high-risk zones for dengue transmission. Public health officials are urging residents to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites and maintain hygienic surroundings, while also emphasizing the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when experiencing fever symptoms.
