Sri Lanka's inflation rate climbed to 7.2% in July 2026, marking a notable increase from the previous month, driven primarily by rising food prices, according to official statistics.

Sri Lanka's overall inflation rate reached 7.2% on a year-on-year basis in July 2026, up from 6.5% in June, the Department of Census and Statistics reported. The increase reflects growing price pressures across the economy as measured by the National Consumer Price Index.

Food inflation showed the most significant acceleration, rising sharply to 4.9% in July from 3.3% the previous month. This substantial jump in food prices suggests mounting pressure on household budgets, particularly affecting lower-income families who spend a larger proportion of income on groceries and essential food items.

Non-food inflation, however, showed a slight contraction, declining marginally to 9.2% in July from 9.3% in June. Despite this modest decline in non-food categories, the overall inflation trajectory remains upward, indicating persistent price growth across the broader economy.
